Since everyone's talking about ad blocking right now (iOS 9 was released last week), I thought I'd offer my two cents.
My take is a little simpler than most, though.
We should stop debating whether there should or shouldn't be ads.
We should also stop asking if ad blocking is stealing, whether publishers morally deserve compensation and whether or not readers will pay money for articles or monthly subscriptions.
It's too late for that.
Humans have created ad blockers, and a large company has brought them into the mainstream. There's no turning back.
Publishers have started to (and will continue to) block the ad blockers, but like hacks and viruses, that will always be a game of catch up.
Publishers and others who benefit from ads are going to need to find new ways to monetize their content.
Sure, ads will probalby hang around for years still, but ultimately, the smart publishers and content creators will come up with different (maybe better, maybe worse) ways to make money, and consumers will face the same choice they faced with ads...
Work within the system or rebel against it.
