I hate that it's commonplace in the agency world to stay late and work weekends.
I stay late fairly regularly, and I also work on things from home a lot of nights, but I'm the owner.
Employees should not have to work overtime, or they should be compensated for it. They need to have lives outside of work. Especially in creative fields. Creativity needs fuel.
Either way, the thought of forcing people to work late for demanding clients is straight up unacceptable. Sometimes it's unavoidable, but the way it's an industry standard is pretty ridiculous.
I hope that as we continue to grow, I can continue to enforce the no-working-late policy. Truthfully, I'm a little scared that at some point it will be hard to do. The more money the client pays you, the more demanding they're allowed to be.
I'll do whatever I can, though. This past week a lot of our people stayed late and worked hard over the weekend because we had some important things happening. We didn't ask them to, and I hope I showed them my appreciation. It was a bit of a surprise to me, but it really helped the company.
It's a bit ironic, but I think that reinforces my point.
